This blog was part of a presentation at the third Afrikaans Grammar Workshop, held in Amsterdam in October 2021. We report on our work on the development of a comprehensive construction network of the word “fok” as part of a project to compile a digital constructicon of Afrikaans swearwords – the Afrikaanse Vloekepedia. Such a construction network not only includes morphological (fokken, fokker, befok, opfok, etc.) and syntactic (wat de fok, de fok in, etc.) constructions, but also information on the constructionalisation of these constructions in Afrikaans, and their cognates in other languages in Afrikaans’ ecosystem, specifically Dutch (“fokken”) and English (“fuck”).
